People often assume poker is an all male sports and that it is played in a smoke filled room, where players drink beer and make lewd comments. This is not always the case. Poker is a legitimate sport and comes with its own set of etiquette rules. Following some basic etiquette laws can make the game enjoyable for everyone.
To begin, avoid playing slowly. While you may like to carefully consider all of your options, other player may become bored or frustrated waiting for you to make a decision. Drawing out the game on purpose is rude and inconsiderate.
Another rule is to avoid splashing the pot, or throwing your chips into the current pot. Throwing your chips makes it harder for other players to determine you bet. Also, it may be considered rude or disrespectful of the people you are playing with.
Another important rule of poker etiquette is to wait your turn. This means you should avoid betting actions until it is your turn. Not only is it annoying to other players, it will give players an advantage of having information about your hand before they bet.
It is also considered to be in poor taste to string your bets. This means do not try to fool your opponents by making them think that you are betting more or less than what you really are. Do not make grand gestures with you chips, only to throw in a few. Also avoid drawing the bet out by putting in chips a little at a time. Try to place your bet in one action.
It is also inappropriate to purposely avoid blinds when they are required. Certain games, such as Texas Hold Em and Omaha, require blinds and it is unacceptable for a player to intentionally leave the table when it is their turn to pay.
One of the most important and most obvious rules of poker etiquette is to refrain being a jerk. Though the stakes may be high and emotions can flare it is important to remain classy when playing poker. Avoid using profanity or vulgar language, and being unnecessarily rude to other players or the dealer.
It is also against the rules of poker etiquette to be in collusion with another player. Any form of cheating is not only unethical it is also strictly forbidden at all poker games. You should also avoid playing soft playing other plays. You should always play with your own self-interest in mind.
It is also important to show your winning hand quickly. It isnt polite to allow you opponent to think they have won by slow rolling your hand. You should refrain from asking to see what cards may have appeared if you had bet. This is called rabbit hunting and is frowned upon at most poker tables.
It is also considered rude to talk on your cell phone while the game is in progress. It is also inappropriate to make comments about possible hands or to give advice to other players.
Another rue of etiquette is to discard your hand towards the dealer and close to the table as possible. This is so other players cannot see what youve discarded. It is important to not show any cards until the showdown.
Poker etiquette can be looked at as a set of manners intended to maintain the game and the civility amongst its players. A player that repeatedly violates the rules of poker etiquette should be talked to. They may not know what they are doing is offensive. If after the initial warning they continue their uncouth behavior you may want to ask them to leave the game.

When Youre Not Face to Face Recognizing Online Poker Tells
In a traditional game of face-to-face poker, tells are defined as any noticeable habit, physical reaction, or behavior that gives other players clues about what kind of hand you have. Because online players do not have the advantage of actually seeing their opponents they must rely on the other players actions to give away their hands.
While not always the most reliable tell, the stall is something that you should watch to determine betting patterns. The stall is defined as a player taking a long time to make their decision. With more and more players playing numerous games at the same time and experienced players doing it to throe you off (a reverse tell), the stall has become a less reliable tell.
However, if you have been playing with someone who has been consistently playing crisply and then they break from their usual playing patterns this generally means something. It does not mean the same thing in all players so it is important to observe and note what type of hands they usually have when they go into a stall. Likewise, if a player has been playing slowly and then they speed up their betting pattern, make a note of the situation and use that information the next time it happens.
Just like in traditional face-to-face poker, analyzing betting patterns is an important part of being a successful online poker player. This means being aware of a players habit or rhythms, including the normal speed of their bet, and the size of the bet. Learn to recognize patterns that develop when a player deviates from their regular activity patterns.
Another common tell for online players is referred to as the rant. In a normal face-to-face poker game players can subtly show signs of frustration, however online player often do not behave as subtly. They will engage in live chat and often rant about how the software is rigged or insult their opponents because they are losing. When a player goes on a rant, it is usually an indication that they are about to go on the tilt. This means that they are about to start playing recklessly because they are frustrated that they are not doing well.
In addition, if you come across an online poker player who has had their chat privileges revoked, you can assume that they are a ranter. They usually cannot chat because of a previous rude outburst or inappropriate comment. Keep in mind that these players are much more likely to tilt. Someone who whines in an online poker chat is usually the type of player that will not go on a tilt if they are losing.
Other significant tells are how the player uses the betting buttons. For example, using the auto check button is almost always a sign of weakness. Players that use the auto raise button before the flop are almost always strong players.
Also, keep an eye out for players that like to gloat after a win. This usually indicates that they play tightly and dont win often. This is because players that win on a regular basis do not usually need to draw attention to them selves. Gloaters are also very likely to tilt. This is because after boasting so much after their win they hate to go on a losing streak and will often play recklessly.
It is important to pay attention to online tells, but keep in mind that not every tell means the same thing in every situation. You cannot see they other player but you can see what they do and then capitalize on it.

What to Expect When Playing a Poker Tournament for the First Time
Poker is a popular game and you have to start somewhere when you want to play in a tournament. However, before you enter, you need to know more about how to play and what to expect. When entering your very first poker tournament, its important to establish just what exactly it is for a tournament. The term tournament can refer to almost anything, even a group of friends getting together might call their game a tournament, so find out what youre getting yourself into before you head out to your first poker tournament. Chances are, if its your first tournament, youre headed to a small, privately run tournament, which means that you can enjoy the experience, but also get valuable time in the tournament with more experienced players. Learning how the tournament, itself, works is almost as important as being able to play the game itself. In a poker tournament, youll need to have your wits about you to ensure that you dont get taken for a ride and that you dont get swept up in the excitement of being at your first tournament.
First, you should find out who is running the tournament and what the buy-in rate is. A buy-in rate is the amount of money that you have to pay in order to enter the tournament; this money will be exchanged for money that can be used during play. Most often, poker tournaments do not involve any real money on the poker table. For sure, youve paid money to play and if you win, youll earn money, but the game is played with play money instead of real money. The buy-in rate for the tournament will tell you a lot about what kind of a tournament it is. If the buy-in rate is $10, then youre going to a small, private, gathering at which the winnings will also be quite low. This is a good place to make your poker tournament debut. Most of the other people there will be there to enjoy the game, not to win big money, and you will probably really enjoy the experience. The World Series of Poker, on the other hand, has a $10,000 buy-in rate. Of course, this is not where you should, or even could, make your poker tournament debut.
You should also find out a little bit about the organization of the tournament. How many players will be there and is it tournament in which you can trade for more money during the game, or not? Additionally, who is running the tournament and what can you find out about their organization? You dont have to be a genius to figure out that its entirely possible, in the game of poker, to completely scam people. Especially if there are groups of people who are particularly chummy, or players who are chummy with the organizers, you should be careful about what youre getting yourself into. Opening an amateurs tournament to a few select non-amateurs, who will then share their winnings with the organizers for having let them into the amateur tournament, is just one way of things getting a little bit tricky.
As with the game itself, at a poker tournament, you should watch everyone closely. If its a very social poker tournament, youll want to hold back a little bit and watch the masses to see whats happening. If alcohol and snacks are present, people will be socializing more, and there will be fewer players watching the dealer. If youre in the tournament to have a fun time, relax and enjoy the game. However, if youre there to win, youll want to keep a close eye on everyone until youve been to a handful of tournaments and know the ropes a little bit better.

A poker blind refers to the fact of being in a position to put money into the pot before the hand has even started play. This works in certain types of poker games, namely in variants of poker in which players do not ante, meaning that not all of the players put a set amount of money (or chips) into the pot in order to be able to participate in that round. Games in which all the players ante are played by each player putting in a small amount in order to gain that round. On the other hand, games that are played with blinds are done by having a few of the players at the table put larger sums into the pot before the hand begins. Not everyone puts money into the pot; however, the pot has some money in it before each hand begins. Traditionally, the blinds are designated by where they are sitting in reference to the dealer. Wherever the dealer is at a certain round, the small blind is to the dealers left and the big blind is to the small blinds left. Before explaining the small blind and the big blind, lets take a look at the dealer for a moment.
The dealer typically changes after each round of play. This is because the dealer is the player at the table who has the most opportunity to cheat. Since the dealer might get the chance to cheat, the same person should not always be the dealer. Each hand, the dealer changes, typically going around the table so that everyone takes turns being the dealer. In most games, the dealer is designated by some physical sign on the table in front of him or her so that everyone can see who is presently the dealer. After each round, this physical mark has to be passed to the next person. As the role of dealer goes around the table, so does the role of being the small blind or the big blind. The small blind sits next to the dealer and the big blind sits on the other side of the small blind. Now, what exactly are big and small blinds?
A big blind is the amount of money that is the minimum bet in that game; the small blind is half of the amount of the big blind. What is the minimum amount? The minimum amount varies from one game to another, some games have minimums from $10-$20, meaning that at the beginning of the game the minimum is $10, but toward the end of the game, the minimum will be $20. In more serious games, the amount is much higher, for example, the big blind could be putting in $100 and the small blind could be putting $50. Games are for many different stakes, youve just got to know what kind of a game youre playing before you start playing.
Poker blinds bring a different atmosphere to the poker table than games in which everyone antes before the hand begins. While the two blinds in each round pay a larger sum of money, the rest of the players around the table have the feeling that theyre not paying in order to play that hand. Of course, their turn will soon come to be the small blind and the big blind, but for each round in between, the hand is free. Know which kind of a game will be played, and now what the minimums are, whether playing by antes or by blinds. The key is to know what youre getting into; really, either way is good.

What a Hot Card Game! It Could Only Be Stud Poker
There are several variations of stud poker that are commonly played today. Stud poker is generally defined as a game in which a combination of face up and face down cards are dealt to each player in multiple betting rounds. While there are some rules that are consistent throughout all stud poker games, some details are modified depending on the variation of stud that is being played.
The most common game of stud poker is called seven-card stud. In this version there are between two and eight players. Each player is dealt a total of seven cards. Three of the cards are dealt face down and the other four are face up. The goal of seven-card stud is to make the best five-card hand you can, using any combination of the seven cards.
In seven-card stud all players are forced to ante. The ante is usually one-fifth the low limit bet size. In this game there are five betting rounds.
Five-card stud is very similar to seven-card stud; the primary difference is that each player is dealt five cards rather than seven. The first card is dealt face down and the remaining four are dealt face up.
Another variation of stud poker is called seven card stud eight or better. This game is also known as seven-card stud hi lo. This version is played with between two and eight players. Each player is given three cards face down and four cards face up. The objective of this variation is to make your best five card high hand and best five card low hand. The player with the best high hand wins fifty percent of the pot, and the player with the best low half wins the other half.
If one player has both the best high and the best low hand, then they win the entire pot. This is referred to as scooping the pot. In order for a hand to qualify as low, it must contain five cards that are all lower than eight. If there are no low hands that meet this requirement then the player with the winning high hand scoops the pot.
Razz is another variation of seven-card stud. In this game, the rules for traditional seven-card stud remain the same. The difference is rather than the high hand winning the player with the lowest hand is the winner. Straights and flushes do not count against the hand being low.
Another popular variation of seven card stud is called follow the queen. In this game the cards are dealt as they are in regular seven-card stud. However, when playing this version of stud poker if any player is dealt a queen face up the card dealt immediately after the queen is considered wild for all players.
Another variation of the traditional seven-card stud is called Chicago or Black Mariah. This game is a split pot version. The high hand winner will split the pot with the player with the highest spade in the hole. If the highest hand and the highest spade are help by the same player then that player scoops the pot.
Baseball is another type of seven-card stud poker. In this game three and nines are wild, for strikes and innings in a baseball game.
Mississippi Stud is a variation that has a structure more typical to that of Texas Holdem.
Blind stud is a stud poker game where all cards dealt face down. This game is not very popular at poker tables today because of its high difficulty level.

Yesterday, I was having a pint at my local bar when I noticed a small guy in a dark suit. Sitting to the far-right corner of the bar and away from all of us, this short man was crouched over a glowing video poker screen. Huh?
It was just a few months back that casinos all over the world and especially in Las Vegas were removing poker, baccarat and blackjack tables and adding more and more slot machines instead. But then something peculiar took place. Casino owners and employees noticed that one corner of the machines was more crowded than the rest. A short examination revealed that the games allocated to the slot section was none other than video poker. So why are so many interested players preferring video poker?
Here, I will try and answer some of the more practical reasons why this has happened and will happen even more and more:
1) The Odds: While slot machines offer odds that are pretty difficult to win on (and by that I mean the real big bucks), video poker machines are much easier when it comes to accumulating a large sum because it is somewhat based (even though loosely) on poker. This makes each player think that it is based on his skill more than just on luck.
2) More Choice: By this I am not referring to the pick of different slot machines, but rather to the fact that you have the choice of selecting the row to play with it whereas in slots, you have no real control after you press the button or pull the lever. It is not a secret that the principle of both these two games is to try and hit the money jackpot whether it is by getting the appropriate numbers or symbols aligned or whether it is by getting a royal poker flush. To do this in video poker, you have to pick from a number of five-hand cards.
3) Sitting Out: When playing at a slot machine, you have to play each and every time. If you want to stop, you have to clear the machine so that someone else can get a try. But this is not the case when playing video poker. This game allows you to simply sit out a round or two and then continue whenever you feel like.
4) Higher Money Ratio: Because of the chance that you can sit out any round where your cards are not any good. You have a bigger chance making an overall profit out of the time you spent playing at the casino whether it is an www.gambling-portal.comonline casino or a land one or even whether it is just a small machine in the local diner or bar or regional gas station.
5) It is also said in many video poker circles and plenty of other articles around the web that the statistics of hitting higher paying options while playing video poker are higher in comparison to playing video slot machines.
Conclusion:
Not withstanding all of the above reasons, the fact that poker is very popular and slot machines too only leads me to assume that a game combining the two will be greatly appreciated by any player of either of the two games but more so by those who enjoy the drone of the machine.

There are two ways in a poker game that you can end up having to put in the higher amount of money before the game has even begun. Traditionally, the person sitting to the left of the dealer is the small blind and the person to the left of the small blind is the big blind. These are the two people who put money (or chips) into the pot before the game even begins. Suppose that you are playing a $10-$20 game. Towards the beginning of the game, the $10 is the big blind and as the game goes on, the big blind will move up to $20. So heres how it works at the beginning of each hand: the person to the left of the dealer has to put in the small blind, which is half of the big blind. If the big blind is currently $10, then the small blind is currently five dollars. So before the beginning of the hand, the small blind puts in $5 and the big blind puts in $10. Voila, theres $15 in the pot before the hand has even begun.
The other way that you could be forced to put in the big blind is if youre joining a game that was already in progress when you decided to join the table. If the players of that game are willing to let you join the game, you have to put the amount of the big blind into the pot, no matter where you are sitting. This is the only way to join a game that was already in progress. As a game progresses, the big blind becomes the higher end of money; now, in a $10-$20 game, the higher value is not that much higher than the lower value, but some games are $50-$100 or even thousands of dollars. In this way, putting up the big blind to enter a game can be quite a serious investment. If youre joining a game already in progress be sure that you have more than enough to buy yourself into the game, and that you also have enough to cover a small blind and a big blind, as it will soon be your time within the table rotation to put up those two amounts of money. So in addition to having enough money to bet on the hands that you play, you have to be able to pay the up-front costs so to speak of buying your way into the game and then paying the small blind and the big blind that it will soon be your time to pay.
The best way to play your way out of a big blind is to buy your way into the game and then sit and relax for a while. Get to know the dynamics of the table and what the other players are doing; also, youll want them to develop a trust in you. What you dont want to do is come swooping into their game and then attempt to pull the carpet out from under them in one swoop. Not having assessed the table and the players yet, this ends in loss more often than it ends in winning. Make sure that you have enough money before buying your way in, then relax for a few hands; take a low profile and use the opportunity to observe your fellow table-mates. Of course, if you get dealt a stellar hand the first time around, go for it, but dont let the excitement of buying your way into the game take over and influence your first few hands. It is possible to win after buying ones way in, but it must be done with finesse, not with force.

Razz is one of the several variations of stud poker that are commonly played today. Stud poker is generally defined as a game in which a combination of face up and face down cards are dealt to each player in multiple betting rounds. While there are some rules that are consistent throughout all stud poker games, some details are modified depending on the variation of stud that is being played. The most common form of stud poker is seven-card stud and Razz is a version of that.
In Razz poker, there are between two and eight players. Each player is dealt a total of seven cards. Three of the cards are dealt face down and the other four are face up. The goal of seven-card stud is to make the worst or lowest five card hand you can, using any combination of the seven cards.
In Razz, like seven card stud, all players are forced to ante. The ante is usually one-fifth the low limit bet size. In this game, there are five betting rounds. The ante does not count towards any future bets.
After the deal when every one has one card showing, the person with the highest card has to bring in. Bringing in means placing the low limit bet size in the pot. If two players are tied with the highest card, then the player to the dealers left will be required to bring in. This bet will count toward you first round of wagering. This means that unless someone raises the bet you wont have to put any more money in the pot until you see the next card.
There are five rounds of betting in a game of Razz. In a game with fixed limits, all of the bets and raises have to be equal to the low limit bet size or the high limit bet size depending on which round it is. In rounds one and two, it should be equal to the low limit. In rounds three, four and five it should be equal to the high limit.
In a game of Razz straights and flushes dont count against a hand. In addition, aces are considered low.
In the game of Razz, the highest card by suit begins the action with a forced bet. In the following rounds the low hand will act first. If more then one player has the lowest hand then the player who is clockwise from the dealer will start.
Another Razz rule is that the dealers announce a pair the first time that they occur. However, the dealer will never announce pairs of face cards.
One rule that Razz does not incorporate, unlike some other hi-low poker games, is the eight or better rule. Some poker games define a low hand as a hand in which all of the cards are less than eight. Most of the games that require that a player meet this low condition have split pots. However, Razz is a game where only the player with the lowest hand wins. This includes hands with cards that are higher than eight. Players can even win with high pairs though it is unlikely.
Any player still in the game after the last round of betting will show their hand, hoping to win the pot. The best possible low hand is often called the bike or the wheel. It is comprised of an ace to five straight. The next best hand is an ace, two, three, four, and six, followed by and ace, two, three, five, six. The forth-best hand is an ace, two, four, five, six, followed by an ace, three, four, five six.

The Legalities of Online Poker Are You Breaking Any Rules?
Recently, online poker has come under much scrutiny. Because of the innovative and fairly new technology behind it, there is no precedent spelling out the legality of online poker or wagering over the Internet in general. Currently, no player has ever been arrested or charged with a crime for playing poker online. However, this fact may change in the near future.
Professor I. Nelson Rose is one of leading authorities on online gambling. According to Rose, the United States federal statute clearly prohibits online gambling domestically or internationally. Despite this fact, the US government has done little in the way of prosecuting any offenders of this statute.
A statute called the Wire Act is commonly cited when making the case that online gambling should be considered a federal offense. A section of that statute reads, “Whoever being engaged in the business of betting or wagering knowingly uses a wire communication facility for the transmission in interstate or foreign commerce of bets or wagers or information assisting in the placing of bets or wagers on any sporting event or contest, or for the transmission of a wire communication which entitles the recipient to receive money or credit as a result of bets or wagers, or for information assisting in the placing of bets or wagers, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.”
While the Wire act clearly prohibits online betting on sports, it does not spell out its stance on online casinos or poker games, which are considered by some to be a game of chance. This is where the controversy and confusion begins.
The United States Justice Department has declared that poker and other casino games played online should be covered under the Wire Act. However, the Federal Appeals court has ruled that they do not believe the US Justice Departments interpretation is accurate. This inconsistency will no doubt ignite further discussion and eventually further legislation on the issue of online gambling.
As of now individual states directly regulate the legality of online gambling. If an individual is caught participating in online betting when it is prohibited in their state it may fall under the Organized Crime Control Act of 1970. This act specifies that it is a federal crime for five or more individuals to participate in a gambling business if it is illegal under state law.
However, in November of 2004 there was a World Trade Organization ruling that stated that by criminalizing online gambling the United States was violating international law. The World Trade Organizations Appellate Body held up this ruling in April of 2005.
In September of 2006, United States Congress passed a law making it illegal for a bank or any financial institution to transfer money to a website associated with internet gambling. This legislation made no mention of the Wire Act and did not specify whether or not playing online had any legal ramifications. However, this piece of legislation did make it more difficult for many players to enjoy gambling online and has turned them off from participating. Online gambling, specifically poker has been on the decline since this law was passed.
While currently there is still no definitive answer concerning the legality of playing poker online, there are some important points to consider in avoiding breaking any previously established laws. To begin with, poker players cannot own any share of the house rake. In addition, players can only make bets against each other, and these wagers cannot involve sports bets at all. Furthermore all players must comply with their individual states laws.

Ten Top Weirdo Poker Terms You May Hear at the Tables
Poker has coined many odd terms and phrases over the years. Some of them are so strange that unless you are an experienced player you may have no idea what they mean. However, understanding these seemingly weird terms can make a big difference in your success at the poker table. Here are the top ten weirdo poker terms that have been identified.
If you hear that a player has been komodo dragooned, it means that their hand has been defeated because their opponent has completed a flush or straight over the river.
The river is a term used to define the last card given in all poker games. In Texas Holdem or Omaha this card is also referred to as Fifth Street. In Stud games, the river is sometimes called Seventh Street.
The term Santa Barbara is an odd way a Texas Holdem player might describe a hand if an Ace or King is one of their first two cards. This unique terminology is derived from a destructive oil spill of the coast of Santa Barbara. For this same reason, this hand may also be referred to by some as a big slick.
The term pocket rocket is used to describe a pair of Aces in the pocket or hole. Two Aces has also cleverly been referred to as American Airlines because of the obvious abbreviation AA.
Ducks is a strange way that a poker player may describe a pair of twos. This may be why professional poker player Paul Magriel kept saying, Quack, quack when he placed bets in denominations of two at the World Poker Tour.
Another popular term used by poker players is the suicide king. This phrase refers to the King of Hearts. The term was coined because the King of Hearts on the card appears to be stabbing himself in the head.
The phrase throwing a party may be used in a poker game when several novice players are being loose with their bets. Their amateur status may be contributing to the pot growing considerably, hence they are throwing a part for the rest of the players who are benefiting from their over aggressive wagering.
The term counterfeit is used to describe any hand that has been made worthless because of board cards that duplicate it. For example, if you have an eight and a seven in your hand and the flop displays a nine, ten, jack then you have a straight. However, if an eight comes on the turn your straight is practically worthless because it was duplicated.
The term anaconda is used to describe a form of seven card stud. In this game the card are passed to left and right, sometimes several times. Often five cards are chosen at the end and exposed all at the same time. Some players also refer to this as a Screwie Louie.
Little dog is a phrase used to describe a nonstandard hand that may have been assigned value in a private or home game. A little dog would be comprised of five cards falling between two and seven, with no pair among them. This hand ranks below a big dog, which is a nontraditional hand consisting of five cards between nine and ace with no pair, and above a straight.
These are just ten of some of the most common terms that are a little bit weird in poker. However, the list of strange phrases is as endless as the stories behind them. It is important to have a decent understanding of these terms before joining a poker table to insure you comprehend everything that is going on.
